About Artroads

Join our professional artists and instructors for ten days in the Tuscany countryside, sixty minutes from Florence. Live like an Italian on our hundred-acre estate. Relax in your beautifully restored apartment. Make antipasti in your kitchen. Play tennis, bocce ball or just read by the pool. Walk to town, take the train to Arezzo, Florence or simply stay on the farm. Draw, paint, cook, eat and drink in the views!

Welcome cocktail reception. Continental breakfasts every classday, 7 art classes, 5 dinners including abundant local wines, 3 lunches including a cooking demonstration at a favorite, local ristorante. Special wine and food tasting, castle tour, finale celebration and student gallery, "arrivederci party" and dinner at a beautiful, local ristorante.

Renaissance art, architecture, vineyards, wineries, artisan and antique shops, dozens of medieval castles, ristoranti and farmers' markets are all nearby. Plus, free time to explore local villages, Italy's oldest and largest antique fair in Arezzo, Cortona (the setting for "Under the Tuscan Sun"), Montepulciano (vino rosso famoso), Sienna and the Tuscan countryside.

We'll enjoy three days of drawing and four days of watercolor instruction with the local landscape as our inspiration. Our goal is to capture the essence of the Tuscan light and warmth. Each workshop day will include lecture, demonstrations, simple exercises and specific learning assignments.

This all-inclusive workshop is designed to give beginning and intermediate artists a solid foundation in drawing techniques and in learning to see. After building a foundation of drawing skills, students will learn watercolor "basics" and a process to use in every watercolor painting. A new addition this year includes collage creations made with found and other objects and a photoaging process that will use phto's from our adventures and turn them into a"antique images".

In the evening, following an afternoon of art and relaxation, our dinners will be served al fresco at the estate or at local, traditional ristoranti where you'll absorb some of the Italian language and spirit. The local trattoria owners benefit from the numerous and nearby farmer's markets and specialty merchants and then incorporate the valley's bounty into our meals. The vineyards of the Chianti area and the Casentino Valley will complement our dinners.

One of our workshop days includes a trip to a local vineyard and fattoria (farm) for painting, en plein aire, and a sumptuous lunch outdoors. Our talented and charming guide, Giancarlo Rossi, will present a fabulous wine tasting and lesson on local foods. Shopping at a nearby, famous Italian manufacturer's outlet is an optional side trip that afternoon.

Mid-workshop, we have free time with an opportunity to explore the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The area offers an outstanding number and diversity of activities and sights. Museums, artisan shops, the art and architecture of the Renaissance, vineyards and wineries, hiking trails, restaurants and even a golf course are nearby. The local village boasts its own medieval castle, one of dozens in the region. The nearby city of Arezzo hosts the largest and oldest antique fair in all of Italy the weekend after our class conludes.

After our classes, dinners, demonstrations and adventures, we'll gather on the final Monday evening to celebrate our progress and accomplishments with a gala arrivaderci festa and gallery showing of our work. We enjoy a dinner party at a beautiful, local ristorante. Tuesday morning we head back home or to other adventures with our art portfolios, our workbooks, and the skills we've acquired.
