"The Japanese Tea Garden"
“The Japanese Tea Garden”,
Created as a “Japanese Village” for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, the one-acre site showcased a Japanese style garden. Post exposition, Golden Gate Park superintendent John McLaren allowed landscape architect Makoto Hagiwara to create and maintain a permanent Japanese style garden as a gift for posterity. Hagiwara became the caretaker of the property, pouring his personal wealth and talents into creating a garden of perfection. Now, the five-acre garden features classic elements – arched-drum bridge, pagodas, stone lanterns, stepping stone paths, native Japanese plants, serene koi ponds, and a Zen garden.
